GEARING UP YOUR GOLF CART FOR THE STREET
Today marks the first day of Fall! While southwest Florida may not have falling leaves and crisp winds in our future, it still is one of the most beautiful times of year! Temperatures will drop but you won’t need anything more than a light jacket!
Red and orange sunsets pull us out of our homes and make us want to explore! Don’t forget about Halloween, either! Soon your neighborhood is going to be decked out in spooky skeletons and grinning jack-o-lanterns.
If you’re lucky enough to own a golf cart, we bet you’re already feeling the itch to ride. Before you cruise though, you need to ensure that your golf cart is ready for the street!
LSV’s, or Low Speed Vehicle’s, are street legal vehicles fit for your neighborhood. Additionally, NEV’s, or Neighborhood Vehicle’s, can also be seen cruising the streets of your community. Before you get ready to decorate and ride though, there are regulations that your vehicle must be compliant with in order to be considered Street Legal.
Florida Statute 320.01(42) states that an LSV or NEV is characterized as any four-wheel vehicle that speeds are greater than 20 miles per hour, but do not exceed 25 miles per hour. Just like any other automobile, street legal vehicles are liable to a license tax. Additionally, LSV’s and NEV’s have requirements attached to regulation. Requirements for Street Legal golf carts in Florida include:
- Head Lamps and Stop Lamps
- Turn Signals
- Tail Lights
- Reflex Reflectors
- Parking Brakes
- Rear-view Mirrors
- Windshields
- Seat Belts
- Vehicle Identification numbers
