THE HISTORY OF GOLF CARTS
Nothing screams Florida like golf and its incredible history. The Scottish sport has found a new home in Southwest Florida thanks to our tropical climate, naturally beautiful environment, and plenty of fans. Golf is made even more enjoyable thanks to convenient, reliable golf carts that get you from hole to hole easily. Golf carts are making moving around the course a breeze and are even driving past the green and into golf cart-friendly neighborhoods. Low speed vehicles are popping up all over SWFL communities and neighborhoods. They are an environmentally friendly way to move around and get errands done without having to waste gas and money.
It’s hard to believe that there was a time before golf carts but rest assured there was. What’s more is that these family-friendly vehicles come with a rich history. It all began with Merle Williams in World War II. During the gasoline rationing, his company “Marketeer Company” began experimenting with electric carts. What started as a company that built grocery shop buggies, they evolved and in 1951 they produced the first electric golf cart.
Thanks to Marketeer, golf carts quickly became very popular and soon there were many companies beginning to build their own carts. Max Walker created the first gasoline powered cart, “The Walker Executive”, in 1957. It had three wheels and adhered to a Vespa style. In the 70’s and 80’s, gas powered carts became very popular and rivaled against electric carts. It wasn’t until the 1970’s that golf carts began being seen on the golf course.
